Who is going to make the pasteles?
Let's begin from the beginning... we in our community, in our families are definitely facing an endangered species ... our homecooking abuelitas. My mom the other day travels up to the Bronx to connect with a woman who she has placed an order of pasteles with. The woman is just getting back from Puerto Rico; went to pick up "un Santa Claus" orders of pasteles... for latina women across the new york, new jersey and connecticut. Now what is that all about? Are they a dying breed? Those sweet abuelitas who make the best pasteles in the whole world? And I say they.. because as a second generation neuyorican with no close relatives to speak of in Puerto Rico... I say "they" are a dying breed. Perhaps the sadder thing is that as a second generation (horrible spanish speaking) neuyorican (who could benefit from taking a spanish speaking course) ain't got nothing to replace pasteles for my generation or my children other than mac & cheese and spaghettios. I don't know about you, but my mouth waters for pasteles and I am not sure what I am going to do when the time comes that that nice woman isn't taking orders anymore. Yes, sad but true, our culture is dying not just here but also en la isla del encanto where Santa Claus has as much , if not more clout then Los Tres Reyes Magos.
ReplyDeleteSo the question is, how do we stop our cultural decay, particularly we "Neuyoricans" who don't live in PR and therefore have limited if any influence there.
Well, we can start small, I have always wished I had video or audiotaped conversations with my grandparents; lets start doing that with the still living viejitos in our families.
This is a real problem , imagine trying to find out at Christmas time who is traveling from Ponce to NY so that the family can enjoy abuelitas pasteles. BUT, WE ARE PROACTIVE, INTELLIGENT, AFROCENTRIC WOMAN OF POWER, What is really preventing us from making pasteles like abuelitas does , all we need is the recipe and make sure to make those deliscious mouth watering pasteles with your daughter and granddaughter around you, make it a family thing . Pasteles can not be allowed to be placed on the endagered list... Me muero

I look forward to seeing the pics of all you awesome Afrocentric women of power absoring the recipes, techniques and secrets from the abuelitas who are still able and I am sure will be so delighted when you invite them to spend a little while teaching you in the kitchen. I want to see the videos and pictures of you all making pasteles w/ your daughters and granddaughters. I pray you don't keep me waiting too long! Your sister in love.
